SPIRITUAL GIFTS DEFINITIONS
With this gift the Holy Spirit enables certain Christians with the ability to organise, direct, and implement plans to lead others in the various ministries of the Church with supernatural understanding and skill. This gift is closely related to the gift of leadership, but is more goal or task orientated and is also more concerned with details and organisation. (Think Joseph.)
Those with the gift of apostleship are supernaturally empowered to plant new ministries and churches, go into places where the Gospel is not preached, reach across cultures to establish churches in challenging environments, raise up and develop leaders, call out and lead pastors and shepherds, and much more. They often have many different gifts that allow them to fulfil their ministry. These are leaders of leaders and ministers of ministers. They are typically entrepreneurial and are able to take risks and perform difficult tasks.
We see in the Old Testament where the Spirit of God came upon people for the building of things (such as the Ark of the Covenant or the items for the Tabernacle). This gift is when God supernaturally uses someone to make things which are holy and set apart for holy things or things that have a spiritually powerful ministry to people.
The gift of composing can include composing spiritual music, poetry, or prose. It’s when God has supernaturally gifted someone to poetically articulate spiritual realities with depth, clarity and passion. The fruit is often seen in its ministry to others who resonate with the joy of God’s wonderful truths in the simple yet beautiful wordings.
DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS
The Holy Spirit gives the gift of discernment of spirits to enable one to clearly recognise and distinguish between the influence of God, Satan, the world, and the flesh in a given situation. They can sense the active presence of the demonic at work in people or situations. They are often given insight into how to navigate, break, or expel the demonic beings at work.
The Gift of Dream Interpretation is when God allows someone to hear a dream and have supernatural understanding as to God’s message to that individual. This gift is to build up the church and is often used to bring comfort or confirm direction being given by God.
Those with the Spiritual gift of evangelism are given the supernatural ability by the Holy Spirit to clearly and effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ to others. They are burdened in their hearts for the lost and will go out of their way to share the truth with them. Evangelists are filled with boldness to overcome the normal fear of rejection and engage non-believers in meaningful conversations about Jesus. Their gift allows them to communicate with all types of people and therefore they receive a greater response to the message of salvation through Jesus Christ.
The Spirit of God gives this gift to people in the church to strengthen and encourage people. Those with the gift of exhortation can uplift and motivate others as well as challenge and rebuke them in order to foster spiritual growth and action. The goal of the encourager is to see everyone in the church continually building up the body of Christ and glorifying God.
The Holy Spirit distributes this gift to some in the church to encourage and build up the church in her confidence in God. Those with the gift of faith have supernatural trust that God can do anything and expect He will intervene. They take Him at His Word and put the full weight of their lives in His hands. They expect God to move and are not surprised when He answers a prayer or performs a miracle.
The Holy Spirit imparts this gift to some in the church to meet the various needs of the church and its ministries, missionaries, or of people who do not have the means to provide fully for themselves. The goal is to provide generously. Those with this gift love to share with others either out of the overflow of blessings God has given them or with the very little they have themselves. They often adjust their lifestyles in order to give more to the spread of the Gospel and the care of the needy. They are grateful when someone shares a need with them, and are joyful when they can meet that need.
Those who have this gift are compassionate toward the sick and pray over them regularly. They see people miraculously healed of all types of physical, mental, and emotional issues. They have great faith and trust that God can and will heal some and are not deterred when He chooses not to. They yearn for the day that there will be no more pain and suffering, and sin will no longer wreak havoc on the people of God.
The Holy Spirit grants some people the supernatural ability to minister through creating a warm, welcoming, and safe environment. People feel the peace and acceptance of God through those with this gift as they experience the feeling of being in a loving home or environment. Everyone can provide and show hospitality but the ones gifted are uniquely used by God to minister to those via hosting.
The gift of intercession is one where a prayer burden is divinely placed on someone so that they pray and pray until there is breakthrough and big answered prayer. This is often characterized by intense burdens, tenacious praying, and epic answers. Everyone intercedes but intercessors see unusually anointed and effective in their burdens and prayer answers.
INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES
The spiritual gift of interpretation is given by the Holy Spirit to certain individuals to supernaturally understand and interpret for others an unknown language to God for the building up of the church. Like the gift of prophecy, tongues that are interpreted have the effect of encouraging and blessing the church to love and serve God more deeply and effectively.
The Holy Spirit gives the spiritual gift of leadership to some in the church to care for God’s people and lead people to follow together God’s plans and purposes for the group. They discover God’s aims for the group and are supernaturally enabled to bring people together to accomplish God’s heart. They are “visionary” and less concerned with the details than those with the spiritual gift of administration. Many are entrepreneurial and willing to take risks to see the kingdom of God advanced through the church
The Holy Spirit gives the spiritual gift of mercy to some in the church to love and assist those who are suffering, and walk with them until The Lord allows their burden to be lifted. The gift of mercy is founded in God’s mercy towards people living in painful realities and is consistently expressed with measurable compassion. Those with this gift are able to “weep with those who weep” and “bear one another’s burdens”.
Those with the spiritual gift of miracles are able to do extraordinary supernatural miracles to reveal the reality and power of God over all things. They hear from God about how He wants to miraculously reveal himself and then act with bold obedience calling it into being so that God is glorified and people are confronted with the reality of God.
The Holy Spirit gives the spiritual gift of pastor to some in the church to humbly and gently guide the people in their sphere of influence as they follow Jesus. They are gifted to spiritual lead and spiritually protect the people in their lives. The pastor loves the Gospel of Jesus Christ and puts it at the centre of his life and ministry. The gifted pastor is one of patience and service as they raise up people in all stages of spiritual maturity. The gift of pastor is not the job of pastor nor required for the job of pastor.
The Holy Spirit gives the gift of prophecy to some believers to make God’s heart known and to edify the church. These people hear from God and speak out what they hear. This gift is for the benefit of both believers and unbelievers and is a sign that God is truly among His church. When they speak, they should allow and even expect others to weigh what is said against the Scriptures and interpret the message accordingly. In this way the church may be continually built up together in unity.
The Holy Spirit gifts some believers with the heart and skills to fill the many gaps of ministry and meet the needs of the church as it fulfils the Great Commission. They bring strength to the church by taking care of the important yet often hidden needs. The goal is to energise the church freeing up others to use their gifts to the fullest as well. The result is the continued strengthening of the church and the added ability to see beyond its own needs and reach out into the community.
The Holy Spirit gives certain people the spiritual gift of teaching so that they would help the church fulfil their ministry as “a pillar and buttress of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). They have the ability to understand the deep truths of scripture and systematically communicating them clearly to others. They hate when Scripture is abused and used out of context or with ill intent. They love the truth and speak the truth in love. The effect of their ministry is the upholding of God’s Word and the growth and maturity of His Bride until the day of His return.
The spiritual gift of tongues is more accurately called the gift of languages. Speaking in tongues is often seen in the utterance of prayer to God (1 Corinthians 14:2), in a language that is unknown to the one speaking it. It is also seen in situations where someone will be able to speak in another person’s language the wonders of God, a language unlearned by the speaker (Acts 2) The Holy Spirit gives some believers the spiritual gift of tongues to glorify God and, with the help of an interpreter, to edify the church
